Tom Hanks’s Early Life

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks’s parents, hospital worker Janet Marylyn (née Frager) and itinerant cook Amos “Bud” Hanks had him on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California. His mom’s family is Portuguese; the name Fraga is where they got their name. Because his father was of English descent, Hanks is a distant cousin of both Abraham Lincoln and the character he played on television, Fred Rogers.

In 1960, he and his mother officially split up. Jim (after an actor and filmmaker), Sandra (as Sandra Hanks Benoiton, a writer), and Larry (later an entomology professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) stayed behind in Red Bluff, California with their mother. Before Hanks turned 10, he had already lived in 10 different residences with his family due to frequent relocations.

Tom Hanks’s Career

Hanks made his acting debut in the 1980 low-budget slasher picture He Knows You’re Alone, and soon after he went to New York City and earned the lead role in the TV movie Mazes and Monsters. A production of Niccol Machiavelli’s The Mandrake, directed by Daniel Southern, featured him as the lead, Callimaco, early that year at the Riverside Shakespeare Company. Soon after, in 1980, Hanks was cast as one of the leads in the ABC pilot of Bosom Buddies, playing the part of Kip Wilson.

To get into a cheap all-female hotel, he and Peter Scolari’s character, a young advertising executive, are forced to pose as women. Hanks and Scolari had previously worked together in the 1970s on the game program Make Me Laugh. Hanks relocated to California after being cast in part.

While Bosom Buddies’ viewership was never exceptionally high during its two seasons on television, the show was widely praised by media critics. “According to co-producer Ian Praiser’s comments to Rolling Stone, “I thought, ‘Too bad he won’t be in television for long.'” In my mind, I did not doubt that within two years he would be a major Hollywood player.” Even though Praiser was aware of it, he could not convince Hanks of it. Tom Lizzio, one of Hanks’ closest friends, told Rolling Stone that “the television show had come out of nowhere.”

Tom Hanks’s Honors and prizes

Numerous awards have been considered by Hanks throughout his career as an actor and producer. Hanks has been nominated for an unprecedented Oscar six times, winning the award for Best Actor twice (1993 and 1994) for his performances in the films Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. 2013 also saw Hanks nominated for a Tony Award for his role in Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy.

From the Earth to the Moon (1998), Band of Brothers (2002), John Adams (2008), The Pacific (2010), Game Change (2012), and Olive Kitteridge (2015) are just a few of the television films and limited series for which Hanks has been nominated for and won seven Primetime Emmy Awards.

Posts claiming American actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson had died of COVID-19 have been widely shared on social media. This is an untruthful assertion. Hanks and Wilson fully recovered from their illness and are now out of danger.

Two websites that illustrate the erroneous assertion are here and here. Most threads feature at least one or two screenshots from news stories on the pair.

An article from March 13, 2020, which has since been taken down, contains erroneous information regarding Hanks’s death. The story is from “News24,” a website hosted at “the-daily-star.com,” which explicitly states in its disclaimer that it is satire.
