The Buffalo Bills routed the Tennessee Titans 41-7 on Monday night in a rout at home in Orchard Park, New York. The score remained close as the second quarter progressed (10-7). The Bills scored 34 unanswered points and blew the doors off the stadium.
Josh Allen, a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, rediscovered his rapport with Stefon Diggs, his top receiver. To the tune of three touchdown passes and 148 receiving yards, Allen connected with Diggs on 12 receptions against rookie cornerback Roger McCreary.
After throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns, Allen was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter. The Bills’ opening drive was sparked by Allen’s pass to fullback Reggie Gilliam (two catches, 17 yards) on the game’s opening play. Diggs’ first touchdown may have been the simplest of the season, as Allen made a frantic play to find him in the end zone.
However, Diggs’s leaping reception in the end zone on his second pass was worthy of a highlight reel. The play went for 46 yards and put the Vikings in the red area. The Bills’ top wideout, Gabriel Davis, was sidelined with an ankle injury, but that didn’t stop their offense from dominating. Jake Kumerow made two catches for 50 yards on the outside as his replacement.
On their opening possession, the Titans tied the game thanks to a touchdown run by Derrick Henry. But the Bills’ defensive front was relentless after losing left tackle Taylor Lewan on the opening offensive play of the game, and they didn’t give quarterback Ryan Tannehill much time in the pocket. “After Ankle Injury Progress J.C. Jackson Will Play Thursday Against the Chiefs”
As time wound down and the Bills began to pull away, Tannehill appeared to be trying to force some passes. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 117 yards and two picks. Henry’s rushing performance declined this week, ending with 25 yards on 13 attempts. Bills’ linebacker Matt Milano scored the game-winning touchdown by returning Tannehill’s second interception for a touchdown.
The Titans’ head coach decided to start the rookie quarterback Malik Willis at that time. Willis was not very effective as a passer (1-for-4) for 6 yards, but he showed his rushing ability by gaining 16 yards on just 4 carries. His teammate blocked his path on a read option play, and he subsequently fumbled the ball. The Liberty University QB had a rough first game in the NFL. Quite simply, the Titans struggled on both sides of the ball.
After opening the NFL season with a road win against the Los Angeles Rams last week, the consensus was that the Bills should be considered among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Like clockwork, the Bills Mafia was present at the home opener to cheer on the team, and Allen was there to applaud their efforts. He went so far as to describe the gridlock he endured on the way to the stadium well before the game started. They’re the best supporters in the world, and they came out in droves for us,” he said.
In Week 3, the Bills will head back out on the road to face a divisional opponent in the form of the undefeated Miami Dolphins.
