Is Premiere League Postponed? When Could the Postponed Games Be Played?

Is Premiere League Postponed

Is Premiere League Postponed

The Premier League which was supposed to be played from Saturday until Monday has postponed all games in respect of Queen Elizabeth II as she passed away at the age of 96.

With matches canceled in a season cut down due to the winter World Cup which is set to take place in Qatar on November 20 looking for a new place to play the games is not going to be an easy task.

Let’s take a dig at the canceled games along with the possible ones at risk.

Games that have been Postponed

Games that are likely to be Postponed

On Monday, September 19 the Queen’s funeral will take place which wouldn’t affect the Premier League directly as the 2-week international break starts on the same day. However the matches scheduled to be held the weekend prior to it from September 16 to 18 are under question.

Police resources are needed for the days moving to the funeral meaning football matches might not be played considering security concerns. Rangers’ Champions League game against Napoli planned to be held on Tuesday has been shifted to Wednesday due to the resources required whereas the Queen’s coffin supposed to be sent to London on Tuesday evening is currently in Scotland where the Queen took her last breath.

From Thursday until Sunday, the Queen’s coffin will be at Westminster Hall in central London putting a question on the matches supposed to be played in the London area: particularly the two slated to be played on Sunday. At least Chelsea vs. Liverpool could shift a day ahead and take place on Saturday rather however on Thursday evening Arsenal are in Europa League action so it could just be played on Sunday.

It’s the resources required to police the people supposed to go to Westminster Hall across the weekend along with those visiting the capital city to line the streets for the state funeral on September 19.

On Wednesday Brighton vs. Palace was called off because of a scheduled train strikethrough it is canceled now there is no update on the game currently.

All matches may be postponed by the Premier League and the EFL as an honor ahead of the funeral.

Games in European Competition Could also be Postponed

On Thursday, Arsenal, Man United and West Ham played their matches in the Europa League and Europa Conference League. While the news of the Queen’s demise broke out, Arsenal was in action against FC Zurich whereas United and West Ham were all set to play.

There were rumors that this week’s games in both of these competitions along with the 6 games having British clubs in the Champions League may also be canceled.

Chelsea vs. FC Salzburg is less likely to be impacted even if the Queen’s coffin will be sent from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall in an official procession on Wednesday.

However Arsenal’s Europa League tie against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday is under doubt since the Queen’s coffin will already have been put on view for the people to pay their honor ahead of the funeral ceremony. Having all group stage ties finished until the first week of November looking for a new date for a European tie seems majorly impossible. On Saturday night PSV tweeted “Arsenal vs PSV update: the match will be played in London with supporters” however confirmation is awaited from the Gunners.

When could the Postponed Games be Played?

Well this turns out to be a big concern as there is no date available for this year. Following the international break each midweek will be used until the beginning of the World Cup, 4 rounds of European games, a complete set of Premier League games as well as the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup.

On the midweek of December 20 English football recommences: only 2 days following the World Cup final with round 4 of the Carabao Cup and 3 sets of Premier League matches across the Christmas time.
