The 2022 biographical musical drama Elvis which is directed by Baz Luhrmann has become the second-highest-grossing music biopic after the 2018 Bohemian Rhapsody with earning of over $284.1 million across the globe against a budget of $85 million.
The film depicts the story of the rock and roll life of singer and actor named Elvis Presley, from his difficult childhood to his 1970s fall. The movie is from the perspective of Elvis’ former manager named Colonel Tom Parker.
Box office has witnessed musicals not performing too well however, Elvis is still managing to keep up with the pace and one of the reasons for this is the stardom Austin Butler brings in.
The audiences become curious whether Butler is singing in the film or just lip-syncing to the King. Read out the full article below to learn about it.
It’s standard for stars to lip-sync to songs others have sung in films. For instance: Rebecca Ferguson did not sing in The Greatest Showman and Zac Efron did not sing a note in the original High School Musical films. Furthermore, in documentaries, actors who are not vocalists usually lip-sync to songs others have sung.
While Elvis’ director Baz Luhrmann is known for making his actors sing their own performances. The 2001 successful musical drama film Moulin Rouge! Directed by him also proved to be daring as Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman both also sang in the movie. Therefore, it would not be surprising if Austin Butler did sing in the film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Butler said, “There are so many people out there who are super-fans, who compile these websites that have the most amazing resources.” Coming to the singing aspect, as shown in the video, Butler has done all the Young Elvis songs himself.
He added “I knew that the singing aspect of [the role] was going to be something I really wanted to give everything I had to,” continuing “I sang every day… It is really like a muscle. Through filming, I started noticing notes that I couldn’t hit in the beginning; suddenly, now I could hit those notes. I was widening my range.”
But Elvis’ later tracks turned out to be more challenging since the singer’s voice altered because of hard living and pill-popping. So, for those, the director borrowed the Bohemian Rhapsody trick of mixing Butler’s voice with the actual Elvis performances.
Elvis is supposed to be available on HBO Max in late 2022 possibly.
