In this uncertain world, at least we know that television has never been better. That much is evident from the 2022 Primetime Emmys, where Oprah was among the many TV icons who helped present Michael Keaton with the award for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work in Dopesick.
Oprah’s choice to host this year was partly motivated by her desire to show support for her newest creative partner, Reginald Hudlin. Oprah debuted her latest documentary, Sidney, at the Toronto International Film Festival only days before the Emmys. Director and Emmys producer Hudlin is also behind the wheel of Sidney.
Oprah stunned everyone in a white Ralph Lauren tuxedo she had been hiding in her wardrobe for years. Since she was “done with high heels and painful feet,” as Oprah put it, she coupled it with the flattest heel imaginable. One day you’ll wake up and realize you don’t need to subject your feet to unnecessary pain for the sake of fashion.
You only need to grow up to do that! A long, shimmering braid finished off the style. Have you ever heard of the saying, “Diamonds on the bottom of your shoes?” When asked what she thought of the cut, Oprah remarked. I enjoy the way your hair sparkles like tiny diamonds.
Oprah took the opportunity to tell the audience how rare it is to win an Emmy as she presented the award, and they applauded her enthusiastically for doing so. Oprah had considered the speech and said before the event, “I was thrilled to open. The writers came up with heartfelt phrases that, in my opinion, sweetly put things into perspective regarding the likelihood of winning an Emmy.
Using her own words, Oprah underscored the magnitude of this recognition: Announcing that “eight billion individuals on this earth, but only 25 Emmys to be given out tonight,” she began. “What are your winning possibilities?” There are 300 million to one odds. She was most definitely familiar with whatever Oprah went on to talk about next. I’m curious, “What’s the secret to victory?” Imagination has a vital role at the outset.
A vision robust enough to withstand setbacks and criticism. All the nominees, she realized, had been through it, but what distinguished them was that they “got back up.” In her final remarks before proclaiming the victor, she offered these wise words: “There is one thing you can never lose, and that is the belief in yourself.”
Colin Firth for The Staircase, Andrew Garfield for Under the Banner of Heaven, Oscar Isaac for Scenes from a Marriage, Michael Keaton for Dopesick, Himesh Patel for Station Eleven, and Sebastian Stan for Pam & Tommy are among the six candidates in the category announced by Oprah. After his triumph, Michael Keaton thanked his family and questioned Oprah, “You’ve got about 90 of them, don’t you?”
When Oprah was leaving, she emphasized how quickly it all went by. “You sit there for 45 seconds on stage after spending three hours in traffic and another hour in makeup? As soon as that happens, it’s over. But it’s worth it in the end: “When Sheryl Lee Ralph won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her part in Abbott Elementary, she encouraged us never to stop believing. That justifies the trouble. The gratitude is mutual.
