Who is YNW Melly?
Jamell Maurice Demons aka YNW, his stage name, which was the short form of the word Young Nigga World Melly. He was a budding rapper and vocalist who worked with music icons like Kanye West for his song “Mixed Personalities,” “Suicidal” featuring icon Juice Wrld and also “223’s” with 9lokkNine. YNW was quite the breakthrough artist of the century. With his debut album like Melly vs. Melvin, he ended up at the number eight spot on Billboard 200 back in November 2019. But soon after that, he was accused of a double murder of two people and that led him to jail time and a possible death sentence.
Why Is YNW Melly In Jail?
On 13th February 2019, YNW Melly was taken into custody after he was accused of first-degree murders. He has been spending his time in Flordia’s Broward County Jail and the double homicide trial. It is said that the rapper killed two of his YNW pals named Anthony William (YNW Sakchasr) and Christopher Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy) during an event that took place on 26th October 2018 in Miramar, Florida. The victims were then transferred to Memorial Hospital Miramar at 4. 35 a.m. They had many gunshot wounds and were already pronounced dead.
Now, YNW as well as the counsel representing him claims it to be a drive-by shooting. However, later video evidence showed that Melly was on the seat when the incident occurred. A 40-caliber handgun round casing was also found at the spot of the crime. After a detailed investigation, it was found out that Melly and his companion in the crime were driving around with the dead bodies before they proceeded to the hospital. As of now, they didn’t reveal the real motive behind the crime. As a matter of fact, the rapper is also suspected to have killed a sheriff’s deputy in Gifford back in 2017.
Is YNW Melly Still In Jail In 2022?
Back when the pandemic was at its peak, Melly had Covid-19 in April 2020. However, the prison officials denied giving him parole and he was cured in jail only. Melly also updated the status of his release on his Twitter and captioned a photo, “It’s bout that time. Y’all can uncross y’all. I’ll be home this year.”
As a matter of fact, he was sentenced to death. However, that sentence has been lifted now and he won’t be penalized with the death penalty.

The rapper is serving time in Florida’s Broward County Jail, and he is still in jail. Jamie King, who is Melly’s mother, posted on Instagram, “The death penalty has officially been removed from @ynwmelly case. Thank you, Jesus #FreeMelly2022,” “I’m literally crying real tears you coming home son @ynwmelly.”
Melly also posted from his official Twitter account, “To all my loved ones and close friends, I wanted to let everyone know that my phone privilege has been revoked I am no longer allowed to call or have video visitation. That is the reason why no one has received any calls from me but do not worry I am in great spirits.”
Though the rapper is in jail even in 2022, fans hope that he will be released soon if proven not guilty. But as of now, Melly is fully guilty, and he has to serve his time may for the entire lifetime. The death sentence has been eliminated and hopefully, he is only going to serve prison time now.
