Show Description

Everyone had assured her that she would never become a star, but then a weird thing happened: she rose to become one of the most adored performers in history, glowing more brilliantly than Broadway’s biggest lights.
With songs like “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People,” among others, Michael Mayer’s daring new production of FUNNY GIRL marks the show’s first return to Broadway following its original opening 58 years ago.
The history of Funny Girl on Broadway
A biographical musical based in the United States, Funny Girl tells the true tale of Fanny Brice, a pioneering female comic who helped to influence the comedy industry for generations to come. Fanny Brice was a star on Broadway, in movies, and Vaudeville.
The play was first presented on Broadway in 1964, and a prize-winning film adaptation of it followed in 1968. It is important to distinguish between the original television program and motion picture and Nick Hornby’s 2014 novel of the same name.
1964’s original Broadway production of Funny Girl
Isobel Lennart and Ray Stark collaborated on the initial Broadway theatrical production in 1964. The lyrics were written by Bob Merrill, and Jule Styne wrote the music. Since Stark became Fanny Brice’s son-in-law when he wed her daughter Frances in September 1940, he had over 24 years’ worth of shared experiences to draw on for the plot. As a result, he was able to provide first-hand knowledge of Fanny Brice’s life experiences.
My Man was the show’s initial title, but it was altered at the last minute to better reflect the reactions of the critics and to bring the attention back to Brice as Arnstein was only a minor character in her life narrative. The 1965 Tony Awards ceremony saw the production nominated for eight of the prestigious Awards, but despite being much praised, it did not receive any of them.
