Nicki Minaj is a Trinidadian rapper, singer, and songwriter. She’s known for her diversity, incisive lyrics, energetic rapping style, and alter egos and accents. Minaj earned fame with three mixtapes between 2007 and 2009. Pink Friday (2010), her debut album, topped the Billboard 200. “Super Bass” hit #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list. Early Life and Childhood

Onika Tanya Maraj was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, in 1982.  Her father was Robert Maraj (1956–2021), a Douglas (Afro-Trinidadian mother, Indo-Trinidadian father) business executive and gospel musician. Her Afro-Trinidadian mother is also a gospel singer. During Minaj’s childhood, Carol worked in payroll and bookkeeping.

Minaj’s father was an alcoholic and crack addict with a violent temper who burned down their house in 1987. Her siblings are Jelani, Micaiah, and Ming. Minaj grew raised in Saint James with her grandmother, brother, and 11 relatives.

Carol Maraj worked in Saint James before acquiring her green card aged 24. She left Minaj and Jelani in Trinidad with their grandmother to attend Monroe College in the Bronx. Carol bought a house on 147th Street in South Jamaica, Queens, when Minaj was five and took her and Jelani in.  Minaj: “My family lacked discipline. Mom encouraged me, but we weren’t strict.

I desired a disciplined home.” Minaj auditioned for Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.  Minaj was cast in the Off-Broadway drama In Case You Forget in 2001.

Minaj’s “All Things Go” and “Autobiography” both mention her teen abortion. She sticks by her decision, even though it “haunts” her.  At 19, she worked as a waiter at a Red Lobster in the Bronx but was dismissed for rudeness.

 Career Beginnings and Mixtapes

Minaj temporarily signed with Brooklyn group Full Force, where she rapped with Lou$tar, Safaree Samuels (Scaff Beezy), and 7even Up as The Hood stars. The trio recorded WWE Diva Victoria’s entrance song “Don’t Mess With” in 2004 for ThemeAddict: WWE The Music, Vol.6. Minaj departed Full Force and uploaded tracks to Myspace, sending some to music business professionals.

In 2007, Dirty Money Entertainment CEO Fendi signed Minaj to a 180-day deal.  Originally, Nicki Maraj, she changed it to Nicki Minaj “Maraj’s name. Fendi was shocked by my bad flow.”  Playtime Is Over was Minaj’s debut mixtape and Sucka Free was her second.

 Beam Me Up Scotty, her third mixtape was released on April 18, 2009. Debra Antney managed her. “I Get Crazy” hit No. 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart and No. 37 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Minaj joined Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment when he noticed her. In November, she participated in the remix of Yo Gotti’s “5 Star Bitch”

Minaj had her first two Billboard Hot 100 performances in February 2010 with “Knockout” by Lil Wayne and “Up Out My Face” by Mariah Carey. Minaj also appeared on “BedRock” and “Roger That” (2009).

 The singles reached #2 and #56 in the US. Their parent album hit number 9 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified gold (RIAA).  Thicke included Minaj on “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy” at Jay’s request.
