Where is Nancy Pelosi?
For more than a decade, first as vice-president and again as president, Joe Biden has informed the Chinese that the only thing worse than a deliberate confrontation is an unintended one. The accident he feared may already be materializing. A visit by Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, to the self-governing island of Taiwan has outraged the rulers of mainland China, who claim it and wrong-footed the Biden administration.
It’s already being referred to as the “Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis,” and it’s expected to be even worse than the last one. It was a fast two-day trip for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which included a meeting with Taiwan’s president and a commitment to protect democracy on the island against China’s threats.
Before returning to the United States, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will visit South Korea and Japan. She is the highest-ranking American official to visit Taiwan in the last quarter of a century.
How old is Nancy Pelosi?
Since 2019, Nancy Pelosi has served as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives. She previously held the role from 2007 to 2011. Since 1987, she has been a member of the San Francisco City Council. From 2003 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2019, she served as House Minority Leader.
Nancy Pelosi was born on March 26th, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland. According to her House biography, her father represented Maryland in the House and served as Mayor of Baltimore from 1947 to 1959. Thomas D’Alesandro III, the brother of Nancy Pelosi, served as Baltimore’s mayor from 1967 until 1971.
Will Pelosi step down in 2022?
The compromise negotiated in 2018 between Pelosi and a group of House Democrats who were threatening to vote against her reelection was a success. No matter what happened, she was willing to hold an election for term limits for the top three leadership positions and to follow through with them anyhow.
Due to the partial government shutdown, the proposal was never scheduled for a vote and was eventually abandoned. It would have banned Democratic leaders from serving beyond the 117th Congress, the current Congress. As for Pelosi’s promise to adhere to the unofficial boundaries, she made that clear in November 2020.
“There was a move to put limits on the leadership and the chairs of committees. They said they were going to do it, they didn’t do it,” the California congresswoman stated. “But what I said then was whether it passes or not, I will abide by those limits. I can’t wait to be working with Joe Biden… I don’t want to undermine any leverage I may have, but I made the statement.”
Since then, Pelosi has dodged inquiries regarding her leadership future, leading some to speculate that she may run for re-election in the 118th Congress. Perhaps Pelosi has decided not to announce her retirement out of fear of being a lame duck in her final months.
