Grace Dell Nichols gave birth to Nichelle Nichols on December 28th, 1932 in the Chicago neighborhood of Robbins, Illinois. Nichelle Nichols was named after her grandmother. She spent her childhood in the company of her mother Salish, her father Samuel, and her younger brother Thomas.
Her father was a manufacturing worker and also served as the Mayor of Robbins and Chief Magistrate of the town. Nichols’ son sued Nichelle’s manager/caretaker in August 2020, citing “financial elder abuse.” Bell “actively misappropriated Ms. Nichols’ revenue by siphoning monies from her convention appearances and misappropriating funds from her financial accounts,” according to the lawsuit.
