Mary was born on 3 December 1936 in Indianola, Mississippi and her real name is Mary Alice Smith. Her parents are Ozelar and Sam Smith. Mary had four siblings. When she was just two years her family moved to Chicago and there she completed her education at Chicago Teacher’s College, in present known as Chicago State University, and start teaching in Elementary school.

Mary Alice began her career in 1960 with Douglass Turner Ward’s plays, such as Days of Absence and Happy Endings. From begging she received minor roles in many productions and also washed cloths os cast for getting more money. Her first major role is in La Mama productions, Adrienne Kennedy’s movie A Rat’s Mass in 1969. She performs as Sistar Rat.
Then she was cast in Street Sounds, directed by Hugh, and then Lamar Alford’s Thoughts. Her screen debut was in 1974 with The Education of Sony Carson. Then she appeared in the television shows Police Woman and Sanford and Son. In 1980 she ported in the soap opera All My Children and in Stan Lathan’s Beat Street.
Mary co-starred in A Different World from 1987 to 1989. In 1993 she appeared in I’ll Fly Away and won Emmy Awards for her performance in Oustanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Malcolm, The Inkwell, and Down in the Delta were also done by Mary. In 2000, she participated in the American Theatre Hall of Fame. In Matrix Revolutions, Mary is cast to replace Gloria Foster. Mary Alice take retirement from acting in 2005.
