 Elvis began his musical career in 1954  and recorded for the first time for Sun Records with the producer Sam Phillips. His aim was to popularise the sound of African-American music. Colonel Tom Parker, who was the manager of Presley for more than two decades, negotiated for RCA Victor to purchase his contract when drummer D. J. Fontana joined the classic Presley quartet in 1955. Parker would manage Presley for more than two decades. “Heartbreak Hotel,” Presley’s first single for RCA Victor, was released in January 1956 and quickly rose to the top of the US singles chart. RCA would sell 10 million Presley singles in a year.

Presley got famous as a newly popular rock and roll sound through a string of well-received network television appearances and number-one singles, despite the fact that his performative approach and support of the then-marginalized sound of African-Americans led to him being widely viewed as a danger to the moral development of young White Americans.

Presley made his movie debut in November 1956 with Love Me Tender. After getting a job in the military in 1958, Presley returned to recording two years later with some of his most commercially successful material. He performed little, though, and under Parker’s direction he went on to spend most of the 1960s producing Hollywood films and soundtrack records, the majority of which were panned by critics. His most well-known movies were Viva Las Vegas, Blue Hawaii, and Jailhouse Rock, all of which were released in 1960.

After a seven-year hiatus from live performances, he had a successful television comeback in 1968 with Elvis, which paved the way for a lengthy residency of concerts in Las Vegas and a series of extremely lucrative tours. Presley performed Aloha from Hawaii in 1973, the first solo artist concert to be aired globally. His health had been gravely damaged by years of prescription drug misuse and poor eating patterns, and he passed very unexpectedly at the age of 42 in 1977 at his Graceland home.
