Merritt was born on April 30, 2001, in New York City and his mother brought him up single-handedly with two younger siblings. He admitted himself to being a troublemaker as a child since he used to get involved in petty robberies and school fights quite frequently.

When he was 15, he was detained for one of his robberies, and as a result of which he was sentenced to one year to Youth Detention Center where he first started writing raps one of his hit singles “`Resume” was also written by him during this time.

Lil Tjay was shot many times on June 22, 2022, in New Jersey during an attempted robbery and suffered multiple injuries. According to police reports, he was with two other men among whom one had a single gunshot.  On June 23, the report came out stating that Merritt was still unconscious after the shooting.

Coming to his relationship status, not much is known but there are rumors of him dating a social media personality and model named Lala Baptiste.

Lil Tjay has earned the majority of his net worth from his career in the industry. In 2018, Merritt launched his debut extended play “No Comparison” on Columbia Records. The next year, he released another extended play F.N which peaked at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 whereas at number 35 in Canada.

His song “Brothers” became his biggest hit during that time and peaked at number 9 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Bubbling Under chart and was certified gold. He then worked with producer CashMoneyAP for the 2018 song titled “None of Your Love”.

His 2020 single “20/20” made its way to the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 94 on the chart. He launched the EP State of Emergency on May 8, 2020; the 7-song EP comprised the song titled “Zoo York”, which featured Fivio Foreign and Pop Smoke.

The song debuted at number 65 on the Hot 100. He collaborated with singer 6lack to release the song “Calling My Phone” on February 12, 2021, which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the highest-charting song of his career.

On March 19, 2021, he partnered with Polo G and Fivio Foreign to release “Headshot”, as the second song from his second studio album entitled “Destined 2 Win,” which came out in April 2021. On October 22, 2021, he released the lead single to his forthcoming third studio album titled “Not In The Mood” in collaboration with Fivio Foreign and Kay Flock.

He released the track titled “In My Head” in April 2022 and later that month, he launched a freestyle “Lavish” on his YouTube channel. Merritt made the announcement of his EP Strictly 4 My Fans the next day.
