Peter was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 15, 1949, to Albert “Al” Navarro and Evelyn Littlejohn. His father used to work as a saxophonist and clarinetist and headed a house band. Following his parent’s divorce, when he was around nine, he moved with his mother who was a Saks Fifth Avenue secretary, to Palm Beach, Florida.
During his teenage years, he resided in Bethesda, Maryland with his mother and brother in a one-bedroom apartment. On an academic scholarship, Peter Navarro went to Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and then Tufts University. In 1972, he completed his graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, he spent 3 years in the U.S. Peace Corps, serving in Thailand.
In 1979, Peter Navarro earned a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and in 1986, he earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard under the guidance of Richard E. Caves.
Personal Life
Navarro tied the knot with Leslie Lebon, a California architect in 2001. They lived in Laguna Beach with Leslie’s son from a previous marriage whilst he was a professor at UC Irvine. Leslie filed for divorce in Orange County in late 2018 and in December 2020, their divorce was finalized.

Peter started his career by serving as a research assistant at the Harvard Energy and Environmental Policy Center. He then started teaching economics at the University of California and the University of San Diego.
Peter Navarro went on to teach at the University of California for over twenty years, becoming a professor emeritus. He worked on resolving issues such as energy and the relationship between the United States and Asia.
