Flynn’s father, James Earl Jones, was born on January 17, 1931, in Mississippi. While Flynn’s growing up, James was busy becoming an actor. As a result, Flynn is raised by his mother and his maternal grandparents.
James began developing a stutter as a child, and in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he said that he used to avoid speaking around others until a teacher in high school urged him to read his poem aloud, and he did that without stuttering.
Following high school, James attended the University of Michigan to study pre-med, however, he dropped out after developing an interest in acting. Soon after, he left to be in the military, during the Korean War in the early 1950s.
Following that, he relocated to New York to study at the American Theatre Wing, going by the stage name Todd Jones for a while. He worked many off jobs like cleaning in order to support his early career.
In 1964, he made his film debut with “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” and later landed in “The Comedians” where he portrayed a Haitian rebel surgeon alongside Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
In 1977, James lent his voice to the iconic character, Darth Vader in “Star Wars: A New Hope,” and later returned to reprise the role in the sequels, the 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back” and 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”.
He won his first award, Tony Award, in 1968 for “The Great White Hope”. He won his second Tony Award in 1987 for his performance in “Fences.” Later, he received three nominations for the Tony Award and won one. He won two Emmy for his portrayal in “Gabriel’s Fire” and “Heat Wave.”
President George Bush gave James the National Medal of the Arts whereas President Barack Obama invited him to perform Shakespeare at a White House event. However, never having gone to Harvard University, he earned an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree in 2017.
He was also called up into the American Theater Hall of Fame and received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. In 2011, James received an Honorary Academy Award and became one of the few EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winners.
