Valerie Anne Bertinelli was born in Wilmington, Delaware on the 23rd of April 1960 and she was raised in various different places as the family relocated quite frequently due to her father’s work; the places include Claymont, Shreveport, Delaware, Louisiana, Michigan, Clarkston, California among others. 

She has three siblings: Patrick, David, and Drew. She also has one more brother, Mark, who succumbed to death due to accidental poisoning when he was just 17 months old, prior to the birth of Valerie. She went to Granada Hills High School and the Tami Lynn School of Artists. From 1971 to 1979, Tami Lynn served as her manager.

Personal Life

On April 11, 1981, Valerie tied the knot with musician Eddie Van Halen and the couple welcomed their first child, a son, Wolfgang Van Halen in March 1991. In 2001, the couple separated and in December 2007, their divorce was finalized.

She has revealed that her husband’s drug addiction and dissent to quit smoking following he was treatment with oral cancer, were among the major factors that led to the divorce.

Then, in January 2011, she married financial planner Tom Vitale and she has four stepchildren. Unfortunately, in October 2020, Van Halen passed away after fighting a long battle with cancer.

The 62-year-old actress filed for divorce on May 12, 2022, and the mentioned reason behind this move was “irreconcilable differences” as per documents, the date of separation is December 1, 2019.

In November 2021, the duo parted their ways after ten years of marriage. In a January 2011 appearance, she said “I think I got tired of calling him ‘my spousal equivalent,’” adding further “It’s nice to call him my husband. It feels appropriate.”

In an interview for the outlet’s July/August 2010 cover story, “We’d talked about getting married, but I was still shocked,” adding further “It was sweet when he asked me because he was so scared. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’”

Valerie appeared as a guest star in 1974 on an episode of the CBS drama “Apple’s Way,” and after that, producer Norman Lear soon invited her to audition for the new television series titled “One Day at a Time”.

When she was 15, she landed on the cast of “One Day at a Time” as Barbara Cooper and this role turned her into a television star the sitcom ran for 9 seasons with a total of 209 episodes, and later, she appeared on 2005’s CBS drama “The One Day at a Time Reunion” alongside Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, and Pat Harrington, Jr. While appearing on “One Day at a Time,” she featured on 1977’s “Battle of the Network Stars III”, 1978’s “The Hardy Boys”, 1979’s  “C.H.O.M.P.S.”, and “Fridays” which ran from 1981 to 1982 and also TV movies like 1979’s “Young Love, First Love”, 1980’s “The Promise of Love”, 1981’s “The Princess and the Cabbie”, 1982’s “I Was a Mail Order Bride”, 1984’s “The Seduction of Gina”, and 1984’s “Shattered Vows”.

Valerie appeared in a number of made-for-TV films over the 1980s like 1985’s “Silent Witness”, 1986’s “Ordinary Heroes” and “Rockabye”, and 1989’s “Taken Away”. Later, in 1987, she starred in a miniseries titled “I’ll Take Manhattan.”

Valerie landed the cast of the 1990 CBS drama “Sydney,” as the titular character alongside Matthew Perry and the sitcom ran for thirteen episodes.
