Early Life
Lil Durk was born in Chicago, Illinois on 19 October 1992. His father was imprisoned when Durk was just 7 months old due to which he grew up with a lot of responsibilities at home. When he was young, he didn’t even have enough food times to fulfill his hunger.
He began his career with social media platforms like YouTube and Myspace and found out about his love for becoming a rapper when he started gaining his fan base he even became more serious about his music career when he welcomed his first child at the young age of 17.
Durk dropped out of studies at Paul Robeson High School to be able to join a street gang in Chicago, the Black Disciples. But he was involved in trouble soon after joining the street gang and because of gun charges, firearm possession with a defaced serial number.
According to court records, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated unauthorized utilization of a weapon.
Personal Life
Durk’s father, Dontay Banks, Sr., served two life sentences throughout his childhood and there weren’t even any chances of parole. He had one sibling, an older brother Dontay Banks Jr.
Durk is the father of 6 children as of 2020 and currently, he is engaged to India Royale, his longtime girlfriend.
In May 2014, his cousin rapper McArthur “OTF Nunu” Swindle, was killed and in March 2015, his friend and manager, Uchenna “OTF Chino Dolla” Agina was also shot dead.
Durk’s friend King Von was also killed on November 6, 2020, in Atlanta. His brother Dontay “DThang” Banks Jr. was also killed on June 6, 2021. On July 11, 2021, Durk was targeted in a home invasion but he was not hurt and the suspect also escaped.
In Durk’s song titled “Viral Moment,” he reveals that “I changed my life, I’m Muslim.” In his verse on “In the Bible” by Drake, he says “I’m Muslim / I go by Quran.”
Career
Durk took his music career seriously in 2011. After his two singles titled “Sneak Dissin'” and “I’ma Hitta”, were released and received positive reviews, he thought of considering rapping as a full-time career.
He then released his third mixtape titled “Life Ain’t No Joke” on October 19, 2012, and in December, his single titled “L’s Anthem” was released.
After the success of “L’s Anthem” and its sequel single titled “Dis Ain’t What U Want” which was released in 2013, he signed a deal with his collective Only the Family and Def Jam Recordings.
In October 2013, he released his fourth mixtape titled “Signed to the Streets” and 8 music videos were released for the promotion of the mixtape: “Oh My God”, “Bars Pt. 2”, “100 Rounds”, “Bang Bros”, “Traumatized”, “Dis Ain’t What U Want”, “Hittaz” and “Times”.
During an interview with XXL in October 2013, he revealed that he was working on his first album under Def Jam. Furthermore, he was also named part of the 2014 XXL Freshmen Class.
In July 2014, his fifth mixtape “the sequel to Signed to the Streets” was released.
The next year, in March the first studio album’s title was revealed “Remember My Name,” and the release was scheduled for May 12. The first single of the album titled “Like Me” was also released on the same day. The release of the album was postponed to June 2.
The album was then released on June 2, 2015, and debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200. In December 2015, his sixth mixtape “300 Days, 300 Nights,” was released and the only song that was released to promote the album was “My Beyoncé” featuring Detroit rapper Dej Loaf.

Legal Controversies
Durk was arrested back in 2011, on the accusation of a weapon charge and subsequently, he was sent to prison for 3 months. Later, he was discharged on bond, just to be imprisoned once again for 87 days.
In June 2013, he was booked after he reportedly threw a loaded .40 caliber handgun into his car when he was followed by police on South Green Street in Chicago.
He was accused of illegal utilization of a weapon and was held on a $100,000 bond and his attorney claimed to have 9 affidavits from witnesses who testify to Durk’s innocence. A witness also acknowledged that the gun was his and in July 2013, he was released.
A shootout took place on September 4, 2015, at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just hours prior to planned concert performance and the shooting destroyed Durk’s tour bus. A man also passed away in a tragic event. Police neither arrested nor questioned Durk related to the shooting.
In August 2016, he was cleared of disregarding probation when he was booked on felony gun accusations; the judge released the charges.
Durk and King Von, both were booked on charges of attempted murder in June 2019. As per prosecutors, on February 5, 2019, the two men knocked off and shot a man outside a well-known Atlanta drive-in for a Jeep Cherokee and $30,000.
Following spending weeks in prison, Durk and Von were discharged on $250,000 & $300,000 bonds, respectively.
