Early Life
Born in Bray, County Wicklow on July 2, 1986, Taylor is the daughter of father Peter Taylor and Bridget. She has three siblings: an older sister, Sarah, and two older brothers, Lee and Peter. Her father became an Irish senior light heavyweight champion boxer in 1986.
He used to work as an electrician by trade initially but ultimately, he became a full-time boxing coach for Taylor.
During the period 1999 to 2005, she went to St. Kilian’s Community School in Bray. Apart from boxing and playing association football at school, Taylor also played ladies’ Gaelic football and camogie.
She was a member of a local athletics club, Bray Runners, and allegedly, many American colleges gave her sports scholarships when she was still attending St Killian’s Community School.
But she decided to go to University College Dublin, well known for its sports scholarship program, which she became eligible for through her Leaving Cert results. She decided to drop out of her studies since her career in sports started to take off.

In 2018, the documentary Katie kicked off, which presented her early life and journey to her first title shot. She is fond of the Irish language and she even appeared on Bernard Dunne’s show titled Bród Club to endorse it.
In June 2018, her father, Pete, became a victim in the shooting that happened in Bray boxing club and was shot in the chest and arm, however, he managed to survive.
Career
At the age of twelve, Taylor started boxing for the first time in 1998. In 2001, when she was 15, she fought the first officially sanctioned female boxing match at the National Stadium in Ireland and won against Alanna Audley from Belfast.
In 2005, she achieved her first significant success in Tønsberg, Norway at the 2005 European Amateur Championships, winning the gold medal in the final of the 60 kg lightweight class.
In 2006, she won her second gold medal in Warsaw, Poland at the 2006 European Amateur Championships and she also earned an award for tournament’s Best Boxer. In the same year, she became the first World Champion of Ireland by winning the 2006 World Women’s Boxing Championship.
She also won the 2007 European Amateur Boxing Championship and the next year she earned her European Union gold medal in Liverpool, England. In the same year, she won a fight against China’s Cheng Dong at the 2008 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship and earned her second World title.
In March 2009, Taylor won against Caroline Barry of the United States at The Dublin O2 and in the same year, she once again won at the Women’s European Union Amateur Boxing Championship. In 2010, she won her third World title in Barbados at the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship. The next year, she won a gold medal in Poland.
Taylor won a fight against Russian southpaw Sofya Ochigava at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship and in the same year, she qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and also won a gold medal becoming the first-ever Olympic female lightweight champion.
On November 26, 2016, Taylor made her professional debut and scored a third-round TKO. In December, in her second professional fight, she fought against Viviane Obenaufon in Manchester. The bout was televised live on Sky Sports Box Office as part of the undercard for the Anthony Joshua versus Éric Molina heavyweight world title fight.
In a fight where Taylor scored a knockdown in the second round after Obenauf seemed to slip, and the latter endured a cut to her left eye after an ultimate clash of heads, Taylor gained victory by a shutout six-round points decision (PTS).
In March 2017, Taylor won a fight against Monica Gentili through a fifth-round technical knockout and also against Milena Koliva through PTS over eight rounds.
On April 29, 2017, she fought against Nina Meinke at the Wembley Stadium and the fight served as a final eliminator for the WBA female lightweight title and was televised live on Sky Sports Box Office as part of the undercard for the Anthony Joshua versus Wladimir Klitschko world title bout.
She led the competition from the opening bell with her speed and combination of punches. In the fifth round, Meinke had a cut from an accidental clash of heads and a severely swollen right eye, and following Meinke experiencing a flurry of punches, referee Howard Foster called a halt to the competition in round seven to protect Meinke from further punishment, and Taylor winning the fight.
In August 2020, Taylor won a fight against Persoon II and in November, she won a fight against Miriam Gutiérrez in London.
