Four new photos from James Cameron’s forthcoming sequel Avatar: The Way of Water have been released. Despite its start with one of the highest-grossing films, the Avatar franchise has been reluctant to expand.
The original Avatar opened in theaters in 2009. It quickly rose to the top of the all-time box office chart due to its groundbreaking visual effects, which brought to life the world of Pandora, a vibrant science fiction world inhabited by a blue alien race known as the Navi, whose habitat was threatened by Earthlings’ mining operations.
Despite its massive success, Cameron took 13 years to complete Avatar 2, which is scheduled to open in theaters on December 16, 2022.
Many of the original Avatar cast members will reprise their roles in the film, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald, with Sigourney Weaver repeating her part in an entirely new capacity.
Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones joined the cast.
The film will pick up more or less in real-time, more than a decade after the first film’s events, and will follow Jake Sully’s (in his Na’vi form) family, which he has formed with his Na’vi life partner Neytiri.
James Cameron has a history of developing sequels that significantly improve the original.
The director previously directed Aliens, which introduced a swarm of Xenomorphs to a crew of space marines in one of the most acclaimed action epics. Terminator 2: Judgment Day stretched the Terminator franchise’s narrative and action extravaganza beyond its scruffy sci-fi roots.
Given how massive Avatar began, it must have been a struggle to push it even more, but it appears as though Cameron has succeeded.
Cameron’s impulse now that he has introduced spectators to Pandora and its inhabitants appear to let the protagonists explore increasingly distant areas of the planet that even they have never been to before.

If the projected sequels to Avatar: The Way of Water can continue to push the envelope in terms of stunning sci-fi vistas and magical animals, Avatar 5 might be one of the most mind-blowing experiences ever presented in theaters. Avatar fans will have to make do with this oceanside excursion for the time being.
