Last year turned out to be quite difficult for Y2K power couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.
From their numerous appearances on the red carpet and romantic walks on the Upper East Side and picture-perfect blended family, it looks like the couple is in much love and becoming stronger than ever. However, that was not always the case.
After a complete seventeen years of the couple’s highly-publicized engagement, the 52-year-old singer called off their engagement, and the reason that made them reach such a difficult decision has been revealed by the Batman actor ultimately.
While talking on the Howard Stern Show, Affleck revealed that the gunfire of negative attention from media led to nearly “50%” of their separation
The 49-year-old actor said, “The idea that people hate you and they hate you together and that being together is poison and ugly and toxic and the thing none of us want to be part of.” Opening up regarding his initial response to the split, Affleck said that he was “f**king hurt and angry and felt like a fool.”
Felt Trapped and Started Drinking: Affleck
The paparazzi-happy pair seems to be on cloud nine since their rekindling in 2020. But, Affleck did (obviously) have some anxiety and doubt regarding coming back together with Lopez.
Affleck said “Well, look, my responsibility to my children is the highest responsibility I have. So, I won’t do anything that’s painful or destructive to them if I can help it.”
Furthermore, he also opened up regarding the breakdown of his marriage with Jennifer Garner, explaining, quite brutally; the way he used to feel “trapped” and in order to deal with it, he began drinking.
Affleck remarked in the interview whether it was not for the divorce saying “I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped.”
He added “I was like ‘I can’t leave ’cause of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
Affleck further added, “ultimately, we tried. We tried because we had kids. Both of us felt like we don’t want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage.”

Though Affleck and Garner parted their ways back in 2015, they continued to be close, with the trio (along with Lopez), bringing their kids trick-or-treating for Halloween in Malibu.
