Koreans call comics and print cartoons “manhwa,” a phrase originating from the Hanja character (pronounced “manhwa”). South Korean comics are commonly referred to as “k-pop” outside of the country. Manhwa is a well-known cultural phenomenon in South Korea, but it has also spread to other countries. Webtoons have allowed these comics to spread outside of Korea, resulting in various movie and television show adaptations.
An artist or writer who creates a manhwa is referred to as a manhwa They are tasked with developing a comic that adheres to a specific style guide. Because Korean is written and read horizontally, Manhwa is read horizontally and from left to right like English literature. Right to left, top to bottom, and bottom to top can all be written and read vertically.
Webtoons, on the other hand, are designed to be scrolled through, whereas manga is supposed to be read page by page. Manhwa, in contrast to manga, is typically in color on the internet but in black and white when it is published.
Manga and manhwa art are distinct in their own ways, and manhwa art is no exception. The bodies of characters are often realistically proportioned, while the faces remain unrealistic.
