The first season of the anime aired from July 7 to September 29, 2017, and consisted of 13 episodes adapted from three volumes of the manga. The season finale was a one-hour special.
Two years later, in January 2019, two compilation films titled Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight were released sequentially.

According to fans, these films were only a compilation of Season 1 and were thus completely redundant. However, the viewer is left with the option of seeing the complete season or the two films sequentially.
Later that year, in 2020, a third film, Dawn of the Deep, was released, the sequel to the previous two. This film continued where Volume 4, Chapter 26, left off, where the preceding films and the first season came to a conclusion.
With nothing new to watch in the following films, viewers anticipate Season 2 of Made in Abyss. Surprisingly, on May 5, 2021, the second season was announced, with The Golden City of the Scorching Sunset to air in 2022. This season will take up where the film Dawn of the Deep left off.
