Regé-Jean Page’s decision to no longer portrays Simon Basset Duke of Hastings on Netflix did not interfere with the streaming service’s plans.
After the breakout star of Netflix’s Bridgerton decided to leave the program after just one season in April 2021, many viewers were left wondering how his departure would affect the show. In their new book Inside Bridgerton, out on Tuesday, co-creators Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers explain why Simon’s absence from the show is justified.
In Rhimes’s words, they had no intentions to keep developing Page’s character: “To be honest, it didn’t alter our course of action one bit. Everything about Season 2 went according to plan.”
Page’s disappearance was mostly overlooked because the show focuses on only one of the Bridgerton siblings per season. There is always a happy ending to the season’s romance subplot. Plus, after their season is up, their tale will be completely told To which Rhimes comments.
For his work on the show, Page was honored with a 2021 NAACP Image Award. He co-starred with Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne Bridgerton. After Daphne’s failed attempts to find love following her introduction to London’s high society, and Simon’s desire to maintain his status as a single man, the two pretended to be in a romantic relationship in the first season.

They developed romantic feelings for one another during the trip. The arrival of Simon and Daphne’s first child marked the conclusion of their story. (In Bridgerton season 2, Daphne and her child made infrequent appearances, and Simon’s frequent absences were justified by his commitment to work.)
Bridgerton portrayed Daphne and Simon’s off-screen romance as a triumph even in the absence of Page. Beers shared Rhimes’ sentiments regarding the first season’s coupling and said that the characters “should be let to enjoy their happy endings” without being dragged into the drama of the other Bridgerton siblings.
Page broke the news of his departure from the show with an Instagram post featuring him on horseback in his Duke costume.
