The first glimpse at Daniel Radcliffe in “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” has been revealed by Roku, its forthcoming biography in which the beloved Harry Potter star plays the role of five-time Grammy winner.
Yankovic is the best-selling comedy recording artist of all time and popular for spoofing and imitating the works of his musical fellows. The biography pledges to withhold nothing and dig into every aspect of his life, starting from his childhood to his rapid success with early blockbusters such as “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon,” while getting into his ardent celebrity love relationship and notably depraved lifestyle.
The feature is written by Yankovic and Eric Appel, and Appel is also serving as the director of the film, after directing a short movie of the same name for the production company “Funny or Die” earlier in 2010.
Update on the Production of the Film
The filming for the film started last month in Los Angeles. Along with Joe Farrell, Mike Farah, and Whitney Hodack, Yankovic is also serving as producers for a production company, while Tim Headington, Max Silva, and Lia Buman for the production company “Tango.”
Eric Appel is serving as the executive producer alongside Henry Muñoz III for Funny Or Die and Neil Shah for Tango.
Yesterday, Radcliffe said “Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly,” adding further “and I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100 percent unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life.”
Furthermore, Yankovic said in an interview: “I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule.”
In an official press release, the head of the original scripted programming at Roku network, Colin Davis penned that “there clearly aren’t enough biopic movies about famous musicians,” prior to mentioning that “Weird” will “shine a light on the incredibly true, unexaggerated story of Weird Al.”
He further added, “This is sincerely the ultimate combination of talent, creativity, and friends, coming together to make something genuinely funny and we could not be prouder to call this film a Roku Original.”
