“Shang-chi” Star Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Which Premiered at the Venice Film Festival This Week.

The actor of “Shang-Chi has been cast in the next Warner Bros. film, “Barbie.” Margot Robbie plays Barbie, while Ryan Gosling plays her boy toy, Ken, as previously stated.

It is unknown who Liu or America Ferrera, who joined the group lately, would represent in the live-action feature.

Greta Gerwig is directing the film from her co-wrote the story with Noah Baumbach. The plot’s specifics have been withheld.

“Barbie,” which has been in development since 2019, is set to begin production at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden facility in London in early 2022. It is scheduled to open in cinemas in 2023.

Gerwig has cooperated with Baumbach on several films, including “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America.” Gerwig directed both 2017’s coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” and 2019’s high-profile “Little Women” adaptation, which both earned Academy Award nominations for best picture.

Robbie will produce the film via her production firm LuckyChap and act as Barbie. Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap, Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films, and director David Heyman will also serve as producers.

Liu was most recognized as Jung Kim on the Canadian comedy “Kim’s Convenience” before becoming Marvel’s newest superhero.

The program, which aired for five seasons, received a larger audience in the United States when Netflix eventually acquired it. Before his breakthrough role in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” he starred in episodes of “Orphan Black” and “Fresh Off the Boat.”

The comic book adventure made its theatrical premiere in the autumn of 2021 and became a movie office smash (by pandemic standards), grossing $224 million domestically and $432 million internationally.

Before joining Barbie’s world, Liu will feature alongside Mark Wahlberg in Lionsgate’s canine adventure “Arthur the King.” The Hollywood Reporter initially revealed Liu’s casting in “Barbie.”
