This article contains all the information related to the musical Cyrano. It also includes details about its release, the prowess of the plot and the famous soundtrack, and the cast involved.
Introduction About the Film
The year 2021 has definitely not lacked on musicals starting from Jon M. Chu’s In The Heights, Stephen Chbosky’s Dear Evan Hansen, Leos Carax’s Annette, Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Tick Tick Boom, and needless to say, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.
The year will conclude with acclaimed director Joe Wright’s take on the Hollywood musical with Cyrano starring Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage.
Wright has made a broad range of movies by portraying classic literary works like Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina, excellent Oscar-winners like Atonement and Darkest Hour, an audience-pleaser work The Soloist, a valiant action thriller Hanna, the family hit Pan, and the soft thriller The Woman In The Window.
He was also the director of the most lauded Black Mirror episode “Nosedive” in Season 3. With Cyrano, Wright will try to go back to the classic musicals of MGM studios the previous year.

What Is Cyrano About?
Cyrano is an assimilation of the stage musical with the same title which was written by Erica Schmidt (wife of Dinklage) which was primarily based on the 1897 classic play by Edmund Rostand.
The plot shows the titular Cyrano de Bergerac who is a skillful writer and poet but is filled with a lack of self-confidence due to his looks. Cyrano is madly in love with his friend Roxanne, but unluckily for him, she loves someone else: Christian, who is a handsome and young soldier with a good physical appearance but hardly any confidence in his words.
Cyrano and Christian strike a deal that Cyrano will secretly write love letters and poetry to Roxanne for Jack. Mingling the words of Cyrano with the looks of Jack while helping one another in getting the better of their own diffidence.
Cyrano surely has the exemplary romantic plot for a musical that will take back to MGM’s prime time of musical chartbusters. Being far from the first time that this story has been narrated on screen: the Roxanne from the Steve Martin-Daryl Hannah film comes to attention, but the musical backdrop will perhaps make the film different from the others.
Who Is in Cyrano?
Dinklage plays the role of Cyrano de Bergerac, a character that he created in the off-Broadway musical production written by his wife Schmidt. Dinklage has quite the right background after starring in innumerable famous movies and television series.
Notably, his most eminent portrayal is that of Tyrion Lannister in the extremely popular HBO series Game Of Thrones, a character which won him 4 Emmy awards. He also has featured in the Marvel superhero film Avengers: Infinity War where he portrayed the role of Eitri and also in X-Men: Days of Future Past where he acted as Dr. Boliver Trask.
He has also featured in the contentious Oscar-winning film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the dark criminal comedy I Care A Lot, the critically censored sci-fi action-comedy Pixels, the vacation hit Elf, and in both the British and American variants of the comedy Death At The Funeral.
He also has lent his voice to animated films like The Croods: A New Age, The Angry Birds Movie and its sequel, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Post Cyrano, Dinklage will go on to feature in the remake of The Toxic Avenger at Legendary with director Macon Blair and the comedy Brothers alongside Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, and the internet’s lover Brendan Fraser, from the director of Palm Springs, Max Barbakow.
Haley Bennett will play the role of Roxanne, which she also starred in the off-Broadway production featuring Dinklage. Bennett has also been on the point of fame for quite some time having been in Antoine Fuqua’s hefty money remake of The Magnificent Seven with celebrities like Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke.
She also played an important role in Tate Taylor‘s cinema adaptation of The Girl On The Train opposite Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Luke Evans, and Justin Theroux. The next big thing for Bennett is Eli Roth’s highly anticipated film adaptation of the video game series Borderlands with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black.
Kelvin Harrison Jr will be playing Christian’s role, who was not part of the off-Broadway production like Dinklage and Bennett.
Harrison has been a central upcoming actor in Hollywood having featured in indie blockbusters like Julius Avery‘s Luce where he acted as opposed to Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts, he also played a major character in Trey Edward Shults’ family drama Waves alongside Sterling K. Brown, Taylor Russell, Renee Ellis Goldsberry, and Lucas Hedges.
He also played a small role and was the Oscar competitor of last year’s Trial of the Chicago 7 from Aaron Sorkin. The upcoming installments for Harrison are going to be his two biggest works ever, where he will be seen in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis with Tom Hanks and Austin Butler as the King himself.
He has also taken up Oscar winner Barry Jenkins’ prequel of Lion King at Disney where he will provide his voice to Scar opposite Aaron Pierre’s Mufasa. The other cast of Cyrano has Ben Mendelson as De Guiche, Bashar Salahuddin as Le Bret, and Ray Strachan as La Rae.
Brian Tyree Henry was to be taken in the role of Le Bret in the beginning but later he was substituted by Salahuddin. That is quite the convincing cast for Cyrano which surely can help it gain fans.
When and Where Was Cyrano Filmed?
Unlike other films releasing in this vacation season, the release of Cyrano was not impacted by the pandemic. The film was announced back in August 2020 and quickly went into filming two months after, in October. The shooting happened in Sicily, Italy under stern Covid guidelines. Wright told Vanity Fair that all the vocals in the film were done live, a famous craze with most latest musicals.
