This article contains all the information related to the release date of the film The Black Phone. It also includes the director’s previous successes and details about the film’s plot.
The Black Phone Release
The year 2021 was an amazing year for horror, with films like A Quiet Place Part 2 and Halloween Kills pleasing the fans.
2022 looks set to continue with another great year for horror fans and one of the most absorbing releases is director Scott Derrickson’s paranormal abduction movie The Black Phone.
Actually it was to premiere on February 4, 2022 but Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have just declared that it is postponed to June 24, 2022.
About the Film
The Black Phone is based on a short film of 2004 with the same name by Joe Hill. Ethan Hawke, who was also present in Derrickson’s 2013 film Sinister, portrays the role of a serial killer with the epithet “The Grabber”, who has a heavy legend attached to him, akin to other horror icons like Pennywise – Hawke also went out of the way to break his “no villain” rule to play the character.
The film also stars Mason Thames as Finney, Madeleine McGraw as the sister of Finney, Gwen and another frequent character of Derrickson, James Ransone as Max.
Reason for the Delay
There was no reason cited for the postponement, but it could be to avoid a somewhat overstuffed weekend, as its previous date of February 4 had the movie going up against Roland Emmerich‘s space epic Moonfall and Johnny Knoxville’s Jackass Forever.
The entire month is quite stuffed with highly anticipated releases with the likes of Sony Pictures’ Uncharted adaptation which has Tom Holland and 20th Century Studio’s Death of the Nile also releasing.
Despite the big earners like Jurassic World : Dominion and Lightyear from Pixar releasing in June, the month overall seems still, with the only other big release on June 24 being Warner Brothers’ Elvis having Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.
Director’s Description
Though The Black Phone did not release on screens till June this year, it debuted in early 2021 at Fantastic Fest and with 11 reviews it holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Derrickson is well known for his direction in Doctor Strange but prior to that, he was a frequent in horror making blockbuster hits like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil.
Based on the recent reviews and a scary trailer, everything points to this horror thriller being another genre buster for the director
The Black Phone premieres in theaters on June 24, 2022.
